This has been one of the craziest journeys I have ever been on and half the time I have not even been active. This website and the business behind it started as a pipe dream that I shared with a friend of mine. We , like so many others, had the entrepreneurial spirit and decided to take our futures into our own hands. We wanted to create a haven for gamers in our home town so that people had somewhere that they could be themselves and feel at home, even when not at home. The original idea started as a board game cafe. A wonderful gamer oasis where you could grab a good bite to eat and play a large assortment of different types of board games everything from classics to indie hidden idols. This was such an amazing vision that we tried diving in head first with no business experience.
We quickly learned that our dream, though maybe viable, was far more expensive then either of us could manage to fund. Thus began our community game nights that we attempted to hold to build a community and raise some capital to start our greater adventure. And that… flopped miserably. I mean, a total dumpster fire. We only had 3 game nights because people just were not showing up and they were becoming a money sink.
Thus the dream of opening a brick-and-mortar fizzled out as we both felt beaten down. But we still wanted to try to turn our love of board games into an income in some way. We pivoted our focus and began the Escape the Bored Podcast on YouTube. Which was a blast to do at the start it was just two friends sitting down talking about something we loved and play a game or two with some of our other friends. That podcast was going strong for a few months but life tends to happen and we eventually ran out of steam for that endeavor, as well. All seemed bleak and we had essentially given up on turning this passion of ours into an income to replace, or even supplement, our nine to five jobs.
Then we enter what I call the dark ages. Game nights are no more, the podcast has fizzled out, and this website is just a reminder of our failures.
The Turning Point
The reason that I have gone into so much detail about the failures of our endeavors is to show that if you truly believe in something then you should never truly let it die. I have decided that I am back for the betterment of the gaming community. This is, hopefully, going to turn into a regular thing. You, the reader, will get a first hand peak into the mind of Connor Slagowski. And I know you, truly, don’t know me but, hopefully, that will change with time as you read my thoughts on gaming, other ways to escape boredom and just life in general. I really do want to create a community where we can share our thoughts on tabletop gaming and so much more.
Thus far, in my attempt to get back into the swing of creating that community, my D&D group and I have started streaming our current session. You can catch us on twitch @EscapetheBoredGaming on Sundays at 3:30 MST, if you’re interested. I have also been trying to post consistently on TikTok because I know that it is one of the easiest ways to find an organic audience. I am @escapethebord on TikTok if you’d like to check that out, as well.
This website and the Escape the Bored brand, as a whole, is about creating a gamer centered community where people feel like they can talk about what they love whether that is video gaming, board gaming, playing golf, playing darts, or whatever other game brings you joy. I love finding the next game that brings me as much joy, or more, as the last and I am always interested in trying new things.
If you’ve gotten this far then I very much appreciate you taking the time to read this. I know that this has mostly been a ramble. I am rusty, give me time :). But if you are on board with anything that I was just yammering on about then make sure to follow social media and check back for more thoughts on how things are going to be moving forward,
Thank you! And make sure to Escape your Boredom.
